Pentagon officials announced today the start of a massive defoliation campaign in the Iran war which will use Roundup herbicide, manufactured by Chesterfield-based Bayer U.S. LLC.
The defoliation campaign is designed to wipe out the Islamic Republic’s corn, soybean and wheat crops, which are unprotected from the weed killer. In the US and other countries in the West, those crops are protected from Roundup through genetic engineering of their seeds so they are glyphosate-resistant. Glyphosate is the active ingredient in Roundup.
“As patriotic Americans, we are proud to partner with our military to entirely wipe out three different food sources of the Persian people,” said a Bayer spokesperson. “After the war, we stand ready to supply them with as many glyphosate-resistant seeds as they need.”
Glyphosate is also a known carcinogen.
“If malnutrition doesn’t kill them, non-Hodgkins Lymphoma will!” one Pentagon official joked.
At publishing time, stock in Bayer AG, Bayer US LLC’s parent company, was up 67% to $23 per share.
